The scope of this project included the interior remodel of the existing Oasis Food Market as well as an exterior "face-lift" of the building's primary facades. The primary challenge of this project was the transformation of an economical box building into an inviting and distinctive architectural experience. To this end, the building's front was redeveloped to create a series of inviting outdoor plazas that act as both a threshold and buffer between the parking lot and the building's two main entrances.
The introduction of organic, curvilinear trellises and sitting walls define a series of small plazas with adequate shade in the summer months and plenty of landscaped greenery, inviting shoppers to linger and enjoy the sunny side of the building. The trellises provide support for future canvas "shade sails" above the outdoor eating area and produce market. The filtered light and shadow created by the sails will allow the interior to spill out during the summer months, invigorating the building's edge by blurring the boundary between inside and out.
The existing building's orientation away from approaching traffic patterns led to a new corner entry complete with curving steel and glass awning and matching sign anchoring the building on Willakenzie Road. The interior of the building uses a lively language of form and materials that often imitate that of the exterior. All of this contributes to a project that is recognizable as a Market of Choice, but establishes a unique identity from its sister stores, one of the many ambitions of the client.
