12,192 SF - Homeless Shelter
The Eugene Mission's New Women's Center provides an essential service to a growing population of homeless women in the area by providing them with a shelter that is warm, inviting and accessible. This 12,000 sf, single-story facility almost doubles the capacity of the existing, three-story building. This new structure maximizes its long and narrow site while still presenting a human-scaled and home-like forecourt and colonnaded entrance porch. The reception desk provides clear views into the daylight-filled day room and dining room which are separated from an intimately scaled chapel by operable wall panels that allow for tremendous flexibility in the different use patterns throughout each day.
Sleeping quarters that accommodate a maximum potential census of over 100 guests are distributed between one large dormitory, a smaller dormitory for guests with special needs and apartments for live-in staff. These spaces are supported by a small commercial kitchen, administrative offices, showers, laundry facilities and a small boutique filled with donated clothing and sundries made available to the guests at no charge. Anticipating a continued increase in the population of homeless women, this building was designed and constructed to accommodate a full second story
